What it is

A peel puts a specific acid on the skin at a specific strength for a specific number of minutes. That controlled injury removes dead surface layers and prompts the skin underneath to renew. The whole result depends on choosing the right acid and the right depth — which is the part that separates a medical peel from a salon peel.

Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it gets into pores; it is our usual choice for acne and congestion. Mandelic acid has a large molecule and penetrates slowly, which makes it the safest starting point for sensitive or deeply pigmented skin. Glycolic acid works on dullness and texture. Trichloroacetic acid goes deeper for scarring, and is used carefully and rarely on brown skin.

In melanin-rich skin, an over-strong peel can cause exactly the pigmentation you came in to fix. So we start low, watch how your skin responds, and step up only if it tolerated the previous session well. That means a course rather than one dramatic treatment.

Who it suits — and who it doesn't

The procedure, step by step

1. Consultation and patch test. Skin type, sensitivity and history reviewed. For stronger agents or reactive skin we test a small area first.
2. Preparation. Skin is cleansed and degreased. Sensitive areas — the corners of the eyes, nostrils and lips — are protected with barrier ointment.
3. Application. The acid is applied evenly and timed. You will feel warmth, tingling or mild stinging that builds and then plateaus. Tell us if it becomes uncomfortable, because we can neutralise immediately.
4. Neutralising. The peel is neutralised or rinsed at the planned time, not left on longer in the hope of a better result.
5. Aftercare. A soothing agent and sunscreen are applied before you leave, and written instructions go home with you.

Recovery and aftercare

Expect tightness and mild redness for a few hours. Superficial peels may barely flake; medium-depth peels flake visibly for two to four days, usually starting around the mouth and nose.

Do not pick or pull the flaking skin. Peeling it early is the main cause of marks after a peel. Let it come away on its own, keep the skin moisturised, and use a gentle cleanser.

Avoid retinoids, scrubs, threading and waxing on the area for about a week, and skip steam or hot showers on the face for two days.

Sun protection is not optional with this treatment. SPF 30 or higher every morning, reapplied if you are outdoors, plus a hat or shade where you can. Skipping it is the single most common reason a good result does not hold.

Results you can expect

Most people notice brighter, smoother skin after the first or second session. Congestion and blackheads improve over three to four. Post-acne marks fade gradually across a full course rather than suddenly.

Peels are a maintenance treatment. A course improves the skin; occasional sessions afterwards keep it there. They do not correct deep scarring, which needs resurfacing or microneedling.
