Laser hair removal on brown skin: what to ask before you book

Laser hair removal is safe and effective on brown skin — when the settings are right. When they are not, the result is burns and dark patches. The difference is not the price.

Why skin tone changes the equation

Laser hair removal works because the laser targets melanin in the hair follicle, heats it, and damages the follicle. The complication is obvious once stated: melanin is also in your skin. In fair skin with dark hair there is a wide gap between the two targets, and the laser can be aggressive with a low risk of harming the skin. As skin tone deepens, that gap narrows. Energy meant for the follicle is partly absorbed by the surrounding skin, and the risks become burns, blistering and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

None of that means brown skin cannot be treated. It means the margin for careless settings disappears. Most bad outcomes I see were not caused by the wrong machine. They were caused by the right machine set as though the patient were someone else.

The four questions worth asking

1. Which wavelength are you using on me?

Diode lasers around 800–810 nm and Nd:YAG at 1064 nm are the appropriate choices for deeper skin tones, because they penetrate to the follicle with proportionally less absorption by epidermal pigment. IPL is not a laser at all — it emits a broad spectrum of light, which makes it considerably harder to control on brown skin. If a clinic cannot tell you which wavelength is being used on you, that is your answer.

2. What is my Fitzpatrick type, and what settings follow from it?

Fitzpatrick typing describes how your skin responds to sun, and it drives the energy settings. Most patients in our region are type IV or V. A clinic that has not assessed and recorded this is working from a default preset, and a default preset is exactly what causes injury.

3. Will you patch test me first?

A small test area, treated at the intended settings, reviewed a few days later. It costs one short appointment and it is the single most useful safety step available. Any clinic reluctant to do it is telling you how it approaches risk generally.

4. What cooling does the handpiece have?

Cooling protects the surface while the follicle heats. Contact cooling on the handpiece, or cold air, matters more the deeper the skin tone. Gel alone is not equivalent.

What good treatment feels like

A hot snap with each pulse, tolerable, followed by warmth like mild sunburn for a few hours. Redness and slight bumpiness around the follicles that settles within a day.

What it should not feel like: sharp pain that makes you flinch, or skin that stays angry for days. Blistering, crusting, grey-white patches during treatment or new dark patches afterwards are not normal parts of the process, and you should contact the clinic rather than waiting for the next session.

Honest expectations

Six to eight sessions, four to six weeks apart, then occasional maintenance. Sixty to ninety per cent long-term reduction, and the hair that remains grows back finer and lighter. Not permanent removal — permanent reduction, which is what the evidence supports and what any honest clinic will say.

Laser works only on hair in its active growth phase, which is why sessions are spaced and why one session cannot do the job. Grey, white and very fine blonde hair carry too little pigment to target reliably, whatever anyone claims.

One thing that is easy to miss

If you are a woman with sudden coarse hair on the chin, jawline or chest, alongside irregular periods or acne, the hair may be a symptom rather than the problem. Polycystic ovary syndrome and thyroid disorders both present this way. Laser will remove the hair; it will not address why it appeared, and new hair will keep arriving. Getting that investigated first is not an upsell — it is the difference between managing a symptom forever and treating a cause.
